Leadership Is Releasing, Not Controlling

One of the greatest signs of healthy leadership is the ability to release people into purpose.
After Jesus delivered the man who had been possessed, the man wanted to stay with Him. He wanted to remain close to the One who had changed his life.
Yet Jesus did something remarkable.
He gave him an assignment.
“Go home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you.”
Jesus did not keep him dependent. He did not keep him sitting on the sidelines. He did not make him feel that he could only be effective if he stayed close to Him physically.
Instead, Jesus entrusted him with responsibility.
That is leadership.
True leaders do not keep people bound to themselves. They equip people, empower people, and release people.
Healthy leadership recognizes the gifts, experiences, and testimonies that God has placed within others and creates room for those gifts to flourish.
The man who was once bound became a messenger.
The man who was once isolated became an influencer.
The man who was once known for his brokenness became known for his testimony.
Jesus gave him room to spread his wings and fly.
Many leaders struggle with this. They want to gather people, but they do not want to release people. They want loyalty, but they do not want multiplication. They want followers, but they do not want other leaders.
Jesus modeled something different.
He understood that transformation was meant to produce impact.
Leadership is not about creating dependence.
Leadership is about developing people until they can carry responsibility, influence others, and fulfill their own God-given assignment.
The greatest leaders are not those who keep people close.
The greatest leaders are those who prepare people to go.
Reflection Question
Are you developing people to depend on you, or are you developing people to walk confidently in the purpose God has given them?
A leader’s success is not measured by how many people stay. It is measured by how many people are equipped, released, and sent.
